Thomas Francis de Burgh Galwey was 18 years old when he joined Cleveland's Hibernian Guards, Co. B, 8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry as sergeant on 4/18/1861 at Columbus, OH. He was promoted 2nd Lieutenant on 9/17/1862 and again promoted on 1/20/1863 to 1st Lieutenant. He was mustered out 7/13/1864.

He was a member of the Fenian Brotherhood, Head Centre and involved in veteran organizations, including the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States.

Galwey became the editor of Catholic World newspaper, however he is best known as the author for his Civil War experiences in his book Valiant Hours, Narrative of Captain Brevet, an Irish American in the Army of the Potomac, published in 1961, after his death. He was also a professor at Manhattan College in the Bronx and later an civil servant attorney for the City of New York.
