Jeremiah Turpin was born about 1773 in Bute County, North Carolina, a son of Thomas Turpin Sr. and Averilla Lewis. By 1789, the Turpin family was appearing in the records of Mercer, later Garrard County, Kentucky. In Thomas Turpin's will dated 20 Nov 1796, he left his son Jeremiah 200 acres of land in Robertson County, Tennessee, a "negro named Arter at the decease of my wife, a feather bed and furniture, and a two-year-old bay colt." Jeremiah and his mother were executors of the will.

Jeremiah married 7 May 1799 to Sarah A. "Sally" Bowles. Names of children are unknown at this time. In a Garrard County, Kentucky deed dated 16 Mar 1830, Jeremiah's heirs were conveying some of their father's land on Sugar Creek to John Orr.
