In Memory ofDeacon - John HITE - who departed this - life August 7, 1843 - aged 60 years, 3 months, 21 days/
Go home dear friends and do not weep, I am not dead but here to sleep, Tho cold and silent in my bed, My rest is sweet, my sorrow fled."

Back of stone:
John, who was born in Shenandoah County VA, April 17, 1783 from thence he immigrated to Fairfield County, Ohio in 1801. Here he resided until May 1840, from here he removed to Marion County, Illinois, in June 1843. He in company with his wife and a portion of his family returned to Ohio. On a visit to his friends and in Seneca Co. Ohio on the 7th day of August 1843 he closed his early career in hopes of a blessed immortality in the 61st year of his age. He embraced the Christian religion in early life becoming a member of the Regular Baptist Church, was a Deacon about 33 years. In Dec. 1803 he was married to Barbara BIBLER, and she died in June 1810. By her he had 4 children, Viz: Andrew, Barbara, Rebecca, Anna, the two latter are dead. On the 26th of Nov. 1811, he married to Elizabeth SEITZ who survived him. By her he had two children, Lewis & Leah, the latter is dead.
