Antoine James LeClaire was born on 8 November 1840 in Scott County at Bird Farm to Antoine David LeClaire and Sarah Mandana Hall. He was one of eight children born to the couple and the oldest of their sons to live into adulthood.
He was Baptised on February 14, 1841 at St Anthony's Catholic Church, Davenport, Iowa.
The family moved into the City while he was a child and he attended St Anthony's Catholic School started by Father Pelamourges on Brady Street. He went on to attend Griswold College which was located between 11th & 12th Streets in Davenport, which opened after Iowa College moved to Grinnell, Iowa.
On January 6, 1877, at St Marguerite's Church, he married Sarah Iten who came from Switzerland at a young age as an indentured servant, which required her to work on arrival to pay her passage. Over the next 10 years the couple would have five children; Mary, Antoine, David Luke, Genevieve and Corrine Eulalie.
He developed his skill as a Riverboat Captain during the early years of marriage while working in the livery business as did his brother Francis. Traveling by Steamboat was common, and it was only natural that Antoine James would follow in the footsteps of his Father and Uncles and learn to Pilot on the River. It was a dangerous occupation. The Missouri River was swift and the channel depth shifted from one place to another. The Mississippi River was calmer but the upper and lower rapids took great skill to navigate.
