John Alexander Lindsay was the eldest son, and second of six children born to Col. Andrew Lindsay (1809-1872) and his wife Sarah "Sallie" Mock (1813-1897), of Davidson County, NC. His paternal grandparents were John A. Lindsay and his wife Elizabeth Wilson; and, his maternal grandparents were Jacob Mock and his wife Juliana Tice, all of Davidson County, NC.
John married Maude Mary Sapp (1853-1929) on 4 October 1881. She was a daughter of Dr. Andrew Jackson Sapp and his wife Mary Ann Hunt. John and Maude Mary lived in an elegant Victorian home John built on North Main Street in High Point. He was Vice President of the First National Bank of High Point.
John Alexander and Maude Mary Sapp Lindsay had three children, John Alexander Lindsay, Jr. (1884-1950, m. Mary Hutchison), Berta Marguerite Lindsay (1891-1978, m. Bruce Hilliard Carraway) and Andrew Avery Lindsay (1895-1976, m. Ida Paulette).
