Harold D. Floyd of Great Falls, 97, a retired Lieutenant Colonel who served in the US Army in World War II, in both the Pacific and European theaters, died recently.
Survivors include his sons, Harold (Lin), Frank (Colette), and Dan (Julee); six grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Mary Schuster Floyd.
Harold was born in Boonville, Missouri the son of Percy and Mabel Floyd. He attended local schools, receiving an Associate of Arts degree from Kemper Military Academy and later a Bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska, Omaha.
He was called to active duty in January of 1942, and in August of that year was sent to the South Pacific, where he served as an Infantry officer in the Solomon Islands until his return to the United States on a hospital ship in September 1943. After recovering, he was reassigned as an Infantry instructor, but a strong desire to return to overseas duty found him in Europe and service with Patton's Third Army in the relief of Bastogne. After the war, he transferred to the Air Force, where he served as an intelligence and administrative officer at the Headquarters of the Strategic Air Command. His many citations include the Bronze Star, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Air Force Commendation Medal, and a Presidential Unit Citation.
Harold was a lifelong member of the Montana Council Scouting Heritage Society, a charter and life member of the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge, a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Association. He served on the Block Grant Community Development Committee of the city of Great Falls and on a city and county Judicial Board. He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, the Montana Military Retirees Association, and the Retired Officers' Association. He enjoyed hunting and sports, especially those in which his sons participated. In later years he also enjoyed traveling the world. He always maintained an avid interest in national and foreign affairs.
Per Harold's wishes, the only memorial service will be at the time of his burial at Arlington National Cemetery.
