Charles Frederick Kauffman, Jr.

Born 09/16/1923, Passed away on 01/23/2017

Fred as he liked to be called, was born in San Diego to Elberta and Charles Frederick Kauffman Sr. in 1923 and spent his youth in that area. He joined the Marines January 1, 1942 right after Pearl Harbor. After 6 weeks of boot camp he went directly to the South Pacific via Pearl Harbor where the US Fleet was still burning. At that time the Services were not ready for another war and he was issued WWI uniforms, guns, and equipment. Serving 4 years in the 4th Marine Defense Battalion as a cook and heavy machine gunner, Fred traveled up the New Hebrides Islands to the Solomon's. He had malaria 6 times during the war. He spent 6 years in the Air Force reserves after returning to the USA.

Fred has had a number of occupations over the years, a Deputy Sheriff, cab driver, an electrician, and general maintenance / electrical contractor/truck driver for McLendon Hardware for many years.

Fred was a lifetime VFW member. He was a regular member of Renton Post #1263. He was also heavily involved with the Military Order of the Cootie where he ascended to Supreme Commander of the USA in 1978-79. He was also a lifetime Shriner.

He really enjoyed his family vacations to Hawaii with his grandkids. The holidays were always a special treat at Grandma's and Grandpa's house. Grandpa Fred always enjoyed cooking a huge feast.

Fred was preceded in death by his wife Wanda in 2001 and his son Charles III in 1994. He is survived by his son Michael (wife Diane), Grandsons, Charles IV and Andrew, Granddaughters, April and Allie, and great Grandchildren, Mara, Kayla, and newly born Jack Michael Bunker.

Graveside services will be held at Greenwood Cemetery in Renton on Wednesday, March 15th at noon with a gathering afterword at VFW Hall #1263 in Renton.
