Leigh H. Hammond was born in Kansas, a son of Wilbert Howard "Bert" Hammond 1867–1947 and Jessie A. Deem1878–1969. He had siblings Infant 1897–1897 and Virginia Louise 1907–1998 #79387558 .

His family lived in Wichita, Kansas where his father was a plumber at a packing plant in 1910.

Leigh married Mayme G. Holt 1898–1979 in 1919 in Wichita. They had children Mary Jo 1925–2009 and Leigh "Bud" Howard, Jr. 1925–2005.

The family lived in Muskogee, Oklahoma where he was vice president of the Midland Valley Kansas City, Oklahoma and Gulf Railroad

They retired to Sun City, Arizona in April 1969 from Muskogee.

He was a member of a Masonic lodge in his native Wichita, El Zaribah Shrine of Phoenix, the Shrine and Sun City Square clubs, chairman of the Sun City Players and a .United Presbyterian Church member.

Leigh died in his home.

Survivors included his wife, Mayme; a son, Leigh Jr. of Oklahoma City; a daughter, Mrs. Mary Martin of Blacksburg, Va.; a sister out of state; and four grandchildren.
