Mr. Springer enlisted in the 129th Illinois Volunteer Infantry in 1862 and served in Company C as a Private until the close of the war, being discharged on June 19, 1865. His last service was under the leadership of General Sherman. The last serious conflict was at Bentonville, NC and was one of the blue-coated veterans in the Grand Review. He was wounded four times and hospitalized for short periods.
After his marriage on September 12, 1867, he rented farm land in Long Point Township. He later farmed in Kansas for one year, returning to Illinois and continued farming in Amity Township for his remaining life. They were the parents of Sarah Elizabeth, B:1868; Robert Marion, B:1869; Charles Walter, B: 1870; Nathan Jr. B: 1875; Alonzo, B: 1876; Otto Clark, B: 1879; Martha,B: 1885; and Francis Durwin, B: ??. Sarah passed away at the age of four and Otto was accidentally killed at the age of 19.
