FINAL RITES FOR T. C. YOUNG HELD HERE YESTERDAY
News of the death of T.[Tayloe C.[Corbin] Young, Sr., for years a prominent business man of this city, came as a distinct shock to members of his family and friends Tuesday shortly after the noon hour. His dead body had been found about eleven o'clock in a Winston-Salem hotel where he had registered Sunday night at 12:36.
Mr. Young was a fertilizer salesman for the Priddy Fertilizer Company of Norfolk, Va. and traveled over an extensive territory, Winston-Salem being a part of his usual itinerary.
Mr. Young was last seen on Sunday night when he went to his room and the exact time of his death is not known. He was known to have had a heart trouble and had recently consulted a specialist. His death was apparently due to a heart attack.
The body was brought to Smithfield Tuesday night and the funeral was held Thursday morning at eleven o'clock at the home on South Fourth Street.
The pastor of Centenary Methodist, the Rev. J. J. Boone, the Rev. J. H. Shore, and the Rev. J. H. Lanning of Roxboro and the Rev. Leon Russell of Raleigh conducted the service. A quartet composed of Theron Johnson, John A. Wallace, Luby F. Royall, and I. W. Medlin sang appropriate hymns.
Interment was made in Riverside Cemetery, and the grave was covered with a mass of lovely flowers sent by sympathizing friends. Mrs. A. H. Rose and Mrs. T. W. LeMay were in charge of the flowers.
Born in Virginia
T. C. Young, Sr. was the son of Mr. and Mrs. T.[Thaddeus] L.[Luther] H.[Howard] Young. He was born in 1882 in Petersburg, Va. Later his family moved to Dunn where he spent his young manhood. In 1903 he married Miss Daisy [Laura Sanders aka 'Daisy'] Smith of Dunn and to this union were born six sons and daughters who together with his wife survive. They are: Miss Elizabeth Young of this city; Miss Carrie Young of Jacksonville, Fla.; Miss Daisy Young of New York and Samarcand; [Tayloe] Corbin Young, Jr. and Smith H. Young of Raleigh and Thad Young of Chicago.
Surviving also are two sisters, Mrs. F. Smith and Miss Emily B. Young of this city.
Moved here in 1918
Mr. Young moved from Dunn to Smithfield in 1918 and was for a number of years part owner and manager of the Young Motor Company, the Ford agency of this city. Five or six years ago he retired from the automobile business and went with the Priddy Fertilizer Company
Public- Spirited
Mr. Young was a public-spirited citizen taking an interest in whatever was for the uplift and lasting good of his community. He was an advocate of good roads and was active, as a member of the committee for Johnston county, in getting the passage of the North Carolina Highways Nos. 10 and 22 through Smithfield's main streets. He was also instrumental in drawing the Henderson-Clinton highway through Johnston county. In 1928 he was chairman of the Carolina-Florida Short Route Association.
Mr. Young was a Kiwanian and served his club as president. He was interested in the Boy Scout movement and was a pioneer supporter of scouting not only in this city but in the Tuscarora Council.
Active in Church
Reared in a Christian home, he was a loyal church member affiliated with the Methodist church. He was a member of the board of stewards until his work as a traveling salesman caused his resignation. For a number of years he was superintendent of the Methodist Sunday school and it was while he was superintendent that the Sunday school annex to the church was erected to take care of the departmental work. His administration was marked by an interest in teacher training he having promoted several notable training schools for his own teachers and those of the county.
But it was in his home that Mr. Young was at his best. A devoted husband, a comrade to his children, he created a home environment that was exemplary.
