Barbara was born in Paducah Kentucky in 1920, and graduated from St. Mary High School. On April 5, 1945, she met her future husband, Robert Bruce Gilbert, from Dillon, MT, who was stationed in Camp Campbell, KY. They were married at the end of 1945, and moved to Helena, MT where her husband Bruce, (now deceased), was an attorney for the Veteran's Administration Department. Upon her arrival in Montana, Barbara served as the Assistant Secretary to the Montana State Senate. As Bruce traveled the state for his job, Barbara happily raised their children. It was in 1953 that they found Fort Benton, MT, which would become their home for the rest of their lives. Ultimately they raised their four children who all graduated from the local high school.
Throughout her life in Fort Benton, Barbara stayed very active in the American Legion Auxiliary, the Saint Elizabeth Altar Society, and service to the Immaculate Conception church in Fort Benton. Most Sundays she was responsible for delivering the Catholic host to those who couldn't attend the Mass and she was a frequent volunteer and visitor at the local hospital and the Sunrise Bluffs Estates.
There was nothing more important to Barbara than the well-being and happiness of her family. She is survived by her children, Rick (Heather), Hub (John), Jackie (Stan) and Mark (Joanne), her six grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her two brothers and two sisters. Her only remaining sister Mary resides in Concord, New Hampshire. She will be missed by all.
The family wishes to thank the staff of the Missouri River Medical Center for their kindness and care. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to the Old Church Restoration Fund, Box 868, Ft. Benton.
Memorial services will be held Monday, June 27, at 11:00 am at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
