Obituary for Doris Juanita Gambill

Funeral services for Juanita Gambill of El Reno will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, March 16, 2017 in the First Christian Church. Joyce Thomason will officiate.

Interment will be in the El Reno Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Wilson Funeral Home.

Mrs. Gambill passed away in her home with her family by her side, on Saturday, March 11, 2017. She was born on November 26, 1913 in El Reno, Oklahoma.

Juanita was a lifetime Canadian County area resident, and graduate of Calumet High School. She was retired from OK Federal Savings and Loan Bank and had also worked for the Treasurer’s Office at the Court House.

She was a member of the First Christian Church, Past Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star, Former President of the BPW, American Legion Auxiliary, and V.F.W. Auxiliary. She was a member of the National Association of Federal Retirees. Juanita also was former President of the Etta Dale Parents & Teachers Association. She loved China Painting, Bridge, and loved to read.

She was preceded in death by her husbands: Howard Ray Laughlin, and Clifford Gambill. Her Parents: Irvin & Nettie (Curtis) Penwright. Son: Ronald Laughlin, 2 – Daughters: Beverly Brooks and Linda Laughlin. Brother: Joe Penwright, and Sister: Francis Balenti, and a Grandson: Johnny Brooks.

Survivors include: Daughter Mrs. Bunny Mathews and husband Tom of El Reno, OK. 8 - Grandchildren: Kevin Brooks of El Reno, OK. Bambi Herzig and husband Jim of Edmond, OK. Shelly Reiswig & husband Ken of Grand Lake, OK. Ron Laughlin & wife Nancy of Edmond, OK. Rhonda Stagg & husband Marc of El Reno, OK. Mike Mathews and wife Shelly of Yukon, OK. Christy Boismier of Yukon, OK. Misty Huber & husband Cody of El Reno, OK. Numerous great-grandchildren and numerous great-great grandchildren.

The family suggests memorial be made to the First Christian Church 400 S. Barker El Reno, OK. 73036 or to Russell Murray Hospice 221 S. Bickford El Reno, OK.

Doris Juanita Penwright was born November 26, 1913 in Calumet, Oklahoma one of three children born to Jessie Irvin Penwright and Nettie Ethyl (Curtis) Penwright. Her family came from New Bedford, England to make the Oklahoma Land Run. Juanita graduated from Calumet High School and lived in California and later in El Reno, Oklahoma.

Juanita met Ray Laughlin in Geary, Oklahoma and they were married in 1929. They had four children, nine grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 19 great-great grandchildren.

She loved to travel and visited most of the continental US, Hawaii and Israel. A favorite childhood memory was walking to the Carnegie Library with her first Library Card to check out Cubby Bear and Mother West Wind.

Juanita was a member of the First Christian Church. She was President of the PTA and the Business and Professional Women. She served in the American Legion Auxiliary and as Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star. The Mayor of El Reno presented her with the Key to the City.
Her advice to those wishing to be a centenarian: "Mind your own business".
