After attending high school in St. Cloud, MN, Pat enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and boxed in the Golden Gloves competitions for the Air Force. He apprenticed, under his father, a painting contractor, and joined the Painters Union in St. Paul, MN, working for his brother Wes Lane’s firm, Lane Decorators, headquartered in St. Paul. He moved to Contra Costa County, California, in 1953.
Pat was elected as the Business Representative of Painters Local 741, Martinez, California, in 1959, and was elected as Business Manager of the District Council of Painters 16 which encompassed ten Bay Area counties in 1967. In 1970, Pat was selected as the General Representative for the International Brotherhood of Painters & Allied Trades, covering the states of Northern California, Oregon, Washington and Alaska. In 1984, he was elected as General Vice President of District 4, comprised of the States of CA, OR, WA, AL, AZ, HI, MT, NV, ID and AZ. In 1992, Pat was elected as General Secretary-Treasurer of the Painters International Union for the United States and Canada, with his office in Washington, DC, where he retired in 1994. Pat was instrumental in establishing the first Painters Pension Fund in the Bay Area and served on many national Labor-Management Boards, where he was widely respected for his honesty and integrity.
Pat was well known for his Irish wit and great sense of humor. He was an avid sports enthusiast – especially golf at his home club of Peach Tree Country Club. In the 1950’s, he helped to build and raced cars at Bonneville, winning one race while timed at 142.85 mph in 1958. In the 1960’s, he raced, sponsored & built Class C Flat Track Motorcycles for the Sacramento & San Jose Miles. He bred and raised thoroughbreds at his Shamrock Ranch in Contra Costa County. Pat loved all animals – particularly his West Highland White Terriers – Margie, Crissy, Danny, Amanda & Katie.
Pat married Francie in 1974 and both enjoyed participation in golf tournaments. Pat & Francie moved to Lake Wildwood, Nevada Co., CA, in 1979, and later to Yuba City, CA, in 1988. Pat’s favorite vacations were several trips to “The Old Sod” where he and Francie managed to visit each county in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, playing golf and sightseeing.
