Anna Maria was born in one of the German Volga colonies in Russia in 1844. She married Michael Engel (the father of the Michael Engel Sr. that came to Canada) in the Volga German village of Anton. The couple had one child, Michael Sr., in 1866. Then her husband Michael died, leaving Anna Maria with one small son (Michael Sr.), and pregnant with another. George Peter was born, and then died at about 5 years of age.
Anna Maria then married Jacob Huber, who was from the neighboring village of Bungart. Jacob later passed away. Anna Maria came to visit her son Michael Sr. in Canada around 1915, and never left.
