Named for his maternal grandfather

LANCASTER -- Mr. Richards, 77, died Saturday, March 5, 2005 at Springs Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Richards was born January 18, 1928 in Lancaster, SC, the son of the late Congressman James P. Richards and Katharine Wylie Richards. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 52 years, Dorothy Arrington Richards.
Mr. Richards was raised in Lancaster, SC and attended Lancaster City Schools. He graduated from Episcopal High School in Alexandria, VA. He was an alumnus of Davidson College, graduating in 1949 with a B.A. degree in History. While at Davidson he was a varsity letterman in baseball and football and served as President of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. After spending time in the US Navy, he earned a Law degree from Georgetown University in Washington, DC in 1952.

Mr. Richards practiced law for nearly 50 years in Lancaster. He also served as the President of the Wylie Estate, which developed residential and commercial real estate in Lancaster from 1957 to 2002.
Mr. Richards was very active in church, civic and community causes. He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Lancaster. He was a deacon and elder, he served on several building and search committees and he was an adult Sunday school teacher.
He also was a member of several civic clubs in Lancaster. He was president of the Lancaster Jaycees, President of the Lancaster Rotary Club and President of the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce. He was a Director of the Lancaster County Children's Home and was elected to two terms on the Lancaster City Council. He also served in numerous leadership positions at Episcopal High School and Davidson College.

Mr. Richards was very involved with local youth sports as a high school football referee, youth football and baseball coach and a tennis instructor. He had a great love of athletics, particularly those involving Lancaster High School and Davidson College. He was an ardent tennis player and played up until the last several months of his life.
An avid reader and writer, Mr. Richards established a writing scholarship for students at USC-Lancaster. He also authored a book in 1992, 'The Parson and the Pirates,' chronicaling the lineage of the Richards family and its link to his favorite vacation spot, Bald Head Island, NC.
Mr. Richards will be sorely missed by his family and friends, but they will cherish his legacy of love for his family, friends, church and community.
He is survived by a brother, Norman Richards, and a sister, Jane Richards Elliott, both of Davidson, NC; three children, Robin Richards Hutchison of Chapel Hill, NC, Kathy Richards Watson and husband, Drake, of Richmond, VA and Jim Richards and wife, Mary Lib, of Davidson, NC.
Mr. Richards deeply loved his eight grandchildren, who affectionately called him 'Papa,' Katharine Hutchison, Dorothy Hutchison, Wylie Hutchison, James Watson, Dorothy Watson, Drake Watson, Rich Richards and Jip Richards.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Ms. Bernice Campbell for her love and dedication to the Richards' family for 47 years and also to Mr. Boyder Bullard and the nurses at Springs Memorial Hospital who cared so thoughtfully for Mr. Richards.

A celebration of Mr. Richards' life will be held at 2 PM Thursday, March 10, at First Presbyterian Church, Lancaster, with the Reverend Christopher Wingard, the Reverend Samuel N. Thomas and the Reverend Julius H. Corpening officiating. The family will have a visitation from 5-7 PM at Mahaffey Funeral Home in Lancaster on Wednesday, March 9.
