Benno Gregory Bissen, 92, of Austin, MN, died Thursday, March 9, 2017 at St. Marks Lutheran Home.
Benno was born August 18, 1924 in Mower County, MN to Gregory and Louise (Schmitz) Bissen. He grew up in the Rose Creek area and graduated from Rose Creek High School in 1942.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946. He worked as a plumber for Carr Plumbing for 22 years and Hormel Foods as a Foreman in the Pipe Shop for 23 years.
He volunteered his time with many organizations. He served as Chairman of the Board of Directors at the Village Coop. In retirement, he delivered Meals on Wheels for 17 years, where he served on the Board of Directors. He also was a volunteer driver for the Senior Center.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years: Mary Bissen, of Austin, MN; six children: Marcia (Dave) Petersen, Rochester, MN; Deborah (Mike) Doran, Hartsville, SC; Greg (Joan) Bissen, Edina, MN; Tom Bissen, Minnetonka, MN; David (Kathy) Bissen, Crystal ,MN; Lisa Bissen, Minneapolis, MN; nine grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother, two brothers, three sisters, one granddaughter, two great grandsons and one great granddaughter.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 am on Tuesday, March 14th at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Dale Tupper officiating. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery. Austin Post #91, American Legion and Olaf B. Damm Post #1216 VFW are in charge of military rites. Visitation will be at the church for one hour before the service on Tuesday morning.
