During World War II Dr. Richards served five years as a Chaplain in the Army Air Force with the rank of Lt. Colonel. Afterwards he pastored several churches: First Presbyterian Church, Waynesville, GA.; First Presbyterian Church Meridian, MS.; First Presbyterian Church, Columbus, GA.; First Presbyterian Church, Roanoke, VA.; and finally First Presbyterian Church, Macon, GA where he resigned to become the Administrator for the Steering Committee for a Continuing Presbyterian Church; which became the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA)in 1973. Dr. Richards was asked why he resigned from the pastorate to devote his full time to serving as the Administrator of the Steering Committee, he said "the refusal of the [PCUS 1967]Assembly to take a stand for the infallibility of God's revealed Word "made God's call much clearer.'"
