Son of William Rice, whose family settled in Adams county in 1834.

He married twice. Miss Mary St. Clair became his wife in 1878.

Elected "Exalted Ruler of Quincy Lodge of Elks," number 100, more than once. He belonged to the Mendon chapter of R. A. M. (Royal Arch Masons). Dr. Rice was also a past Eminent Commander of the El Aska commandery, Knights Templar.

Graduated Cincinnati Medical College in 1878. Graduated Rush Medical College in 1900. He worked as surgeon for the Quincy, Omaha & Kansas railroad. He was on staff at Blessing hospital in Quincy Illinois. He was a member of the AMA.

He and his brother David died at almost the same time in separate states, after both had received treatment at Mayo clinic in Rochester Minnesota. John Rice did not know his beloved brother David was ill.

His obituary names Dr Samuel T. Rice DDS as his brother but Samuel's obituary says they are cousins. In another obituary Dr John Rice's surviving siblings were: Luther Rice of Mercedes Texas; twins and doctors Merritt and Meredith Rice of Macomb Illinois; and Mrs. Mary (J. N.) Sellers of Quincy Illinois. His sister inherited his estate.

Dr. John Rice was buried with Masonic honors at Woodland cemetery in Quincy Illinois.
