Jean Stone, civic volunteer, pianist and retired Anderson County music teacher, passed away at Methodist Medical Center on Wednesday, March 8, 2017, in the company of her children and grandchildren.
Many people in the community recognize Jean as an upbeat and reliable altruist. She acted as a volunteer, leader, or pianist for numerous clubs and organizations, including the Oak Ridge Chapter of Altrusa Club International, the Oak Ridge Women's Club, the Pilot Club of Oak Ridge, the Methodist Medical Center Volunteers, and others.
Upon retirement from teaching, Jean began investing her energy in bettering the community, serving United Way, the Methodist Medical Christmas Chorus, and playing piano at the Altrusa Literacy luncheons for years. Jean also served on the boards of Emory Valley Center, Methodist Medical Center Foundation, Aid to Distressed Families of Appalachian Counties, Clinch River Home Health, and Trinity United Methodist Church.
Born in Gallatin, Tennessee, Jean began taking piano lessons at age four. She continued her studies at Ward-Belmont Conservatory of Music (now Belmont College) through high school and earned a bachelor of arts in music at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky in 1953.
Married to Thomas Stone, the couple moved to Oak Ridge in 1956 when Tom was hired by Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Studies, the predecessor to today's Oak Ridge Associated Universities.
Jean was employed as a music teacher who taught in the Anderson County Schools of Rosedale, Lake City Elementary and Claxton Elementary from 1968 until her retirement in 1993.
She served as church organist for Trinity United Methodist beginning in the 1950's. She also served numerous years at First Christian Church, First Baptist Church of Lake City, and First Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Oak Ridge.
Long-time Oak Ridge residents might recognize Jean as a member of the Back Door Band, and co-owner of the Back Door Pizza Parlor popular from 1968 until the business was sold in 1982.
Jean lived independently until 2015 when declining health led her to become one of the first residents of the new Alexander Guest House where she began a new ministry of encouraging and appreciating others.
Jean loved to travel and was endlessly curious about the world, visiting all the states but four, and making numerous trips abroad. She loved reading, current events, and her friends from her investment club and the Queen Bee Book Club. Jean laughed long and hard, and truly made the world a better place.
She is survived by sons Thomas (Buddy) Stone of Oak Ridge and Jim Stone of Colorado Springs, CO; daughters Susan Stone Byrne and Judy Stone Wilson of Oak Ridge; her grandchildren Sumner Byrne of Silver Spring, MD; Jonathan Wilson of Oak Ridge; Ryan Wilson of Washington, DC; and Stephen Wilson of Oak Ridge; her sister Lee Groves and brother-in-law, Jim Groves of Edmond, OK, nieces Laura Groves Duncan of Edmond, OK, Lisa Groves Ryan of Plano, TX; special family friend Georgetta Marlow; the sweet staff at the Alexander Guest House and Fresenius Dialysis Clinic; and a host of treasured friends.
Visitation services will be held at Weatherford Mortuary, 158 S. Jefferson Circle, Oak Ridge, from noon until 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 12 followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. The family requests that memorials be given to Altrusa Foundation of Oak Ridge Tennessee Inc., Post Office Box 5763, Oak Ridge, TN 37831-5763.
