Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Milton Johnnie Bernhard, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, March 4. A life-long resident of Kerrville, he was born to William and Emma Wallace Bernhard on February 10, 1927. He recently celebrated his 90th birthday surrounded by loved ones and showering each with love and attention in return as he always did. He was married to Betty Luckenbach on October 15, 1948 in Fredericksburg, proudly telling their story and celebrating their 68th anniversary with family in the fall.

He lived a remarkable life. He was such a blessing to his family and so many others. He loved the outdoors and passed that legacy on to his children and grandchildren by always including them in his hunting and fishing activities. Along with this, of course, was the ability to tell a good story which he had mastered to perfection. His stories crossed the generations with tales of the history of his family and the Texas Hill Country.

Milton was an owner and operator of Bernhard’s Ingram Lockers, then later established Milton Bernhard Meat Processing with his wife. He was appreciated and well-known not only for his jerky, sausage, seasoning, and products, but also for his personalized customer service. He was a veteran of World War II, drafted at the age of 18 into the U.S. Army. Community members wrote letters to request that he remain in his local profession, but he chose to serve. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, serving terms on the church council, overseeing renovations for the pipe organ installation, and preparing meats for the annual picnics and Easter breakfasts.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Ida May Bernhard and Mable Orr, brothers Arthur, Earl, Dutch, Marvin, and Wallace Bernhard, and nephews Darrell, Kenneth, Harold, and John Allen Bernhard.

He is survived by his wife Betty; daughter Nancy Kalmbach and husband Ron and their children John Kalmbach (wife Lauren and kids Kallie and Mackenzie) and Jayce Kalmbach (wife Ashley and upcoming baby girl Riley); son David Bernhard and wife Dusty and their children Karen Harris (husband Brad and kids J.C., Michael, and Gavin Neighbors and Paige Harris), Amanda Bernhard, Brandon Bernhard (wife Shannon and kids Caleb, Cole, and Luke), and Sarah Cox (husband Jason and upcoming baby boy Augustus); and son Mark Bernhard and wife Lisa and their children Will Bernhard (wife Rebekah and kids Wimberly and Brooks), Kyle Bernhard, and Kate Bernhard; sisters-in-law Helen Luckenbach Nelson and Karla Bernhard Douglass; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a multitude of friends.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, March 10 at Grimes Funeral Chapel, 728 Jefferson St., Kerrville.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 11 at Zion Lutheran Church, 624 Barnett St., Kerrville, with Pastor Henry Schulte officiating. Burial will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be grandsons John and Jayce Kalmbach, Brandon Bernhard, Will and Kyle Bernhard, and grandson-in-law Jason Cox.

Memorials may be given to Zion Lutheran Children’s Center. The family wishes to express sincere thanks to Pastor Mike Williams, Pastor Henry Schulte, Dr. Klaus Schroeder, and the staff of Peterson Hospice.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Grimes Funeral Chapels of Kerrville. The family thanks Johnny Grimes.
