Irma Mae (Rush) Veit was born June 23, 1920, on a farm north of Lake Park, Iowa. She was the first of 7 children born to Martin and Lela (Crooks) Rush. Irma grew up farming with her family in rural Lake Park. She began her education in Diamond Lake #3 Country School and graduated as Valedictorian from Lake Park High School in 1938. Irma taught 1st grade in Harris and Arnold’s Park Schools after she received her degree from Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls. Irma married Dan Veit at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Spirit Lake, Iowa, on November 21, 1945. They started their family and farmed in the Odebolt area for five years before moving to their farm near Pocahontas, Iowa. Dan died on June 18, 2010.

Irma and Dan are the parents of six children: Stephen (Nancy Brink) Veit of Cherokee, IA, Cynthia (John) Tiedeman of Omaha, NE, Tom (Kathy Staiert) Veit of Fonda, IA, Rachel (Steve) Rosenboom of Pomeroy, IA, Lisa (Dan) Marron of Omaha, NE, and Gretchen (Lloyd) Holm of Cottage Grove, MN. She has 18 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. Irma was a long-time member of St. Columbkille Church in Varina, Iowa. She belonged to the St. Columbkille Altar Society and the American Legion Auxiliary in Varina. Irma loved and appreciated her family. She taught by example and was a compassionate friend. Irma was fond of playing cards with family and friends – even sometimes on the computer – and fishing, especially the trips with Dan.

Irma is survived by all of her descendants, her sister Betty (Bud) McClure of Lake Park, IA, sisters-in-law Lucille Rush, Beverly Rush, Mabel Rush, Rose Crone, Marie Diersen, Leona Mattson, and brother-in-law Paul Veit.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Dan, sister Lois Johnson, brothers Leslie, Wayne, Dean and Bob Rush.
