ILION — Dr. Earl P. Watkin, Ilion superintendent of schools, died suddenly at his desk about1:45 p. m. today.
Dr. Watkin died of a heart attack in his office at the High School building. He had been designated for the 1953 Ilion Good Citizenship Award by William Hempstead Post, VFW, a dinner having been planned Sunday to honor the veteran educator.
He was born in Florence on Feb. 4, 1891, son of Henry and Ida Parry Watkin. He married Mary Ellen Morgan on August 24, 1921, in Massena and came to Ilion as superintendent of schools in 1923.
He was a member of St. Augustine's Episcopal Church and a vestryman of the church for several years.
Dr. Watkin graduated at Hamilton University in 1912 and received his master's degree there. He also attended Columbia and received a Doctor of Education degree at New York University.
He was a member of the Hamilton Alumni Association; had been president of the New York State Teachers Association for two years; past president of the Schoolmasters Association; member of the Council of School Superintendents Association; and a member of several Ilion fraternal organizations.
He leaves his widow; one son, Dr. Donald W. Watkin of Chevy Chase, Md.; one sister, Mrs. Ralph Curtis, Camden; one grandson; one niece and one nephew. Herkimer Evening Telegram, Wednesday, February 17, 1954
