Samuel J. Ryan, son of James and Mary Lucinda (Griffis) Ryan, was born 1859, and educated at Lawrence College. He established the Daily Crescent in October, 1890, and has managed the same ever since it was started. He was married in October, 1909, to Alice C Doland, of Rogers Park, Illinois. Mr. Ryan has served as clerk of All Saints parish, Protestant Episcopal Church, for several years.
