Born in Spruce Pine, NC, on October 1, 1924, the fourth of nine children, to Ethel C. Brown and Henry K. Hemphill. Laura joined the United States Marine Corps in 1944, following the wartime death of her brother Joe, and was assigned to a Marine recruit depot in South Carolina, where she met her future husband. Following WW II, the couple moved to Minnesota and settled in Marshall.
Laura is preceded in death by her parents; sisters Fair Elender, Juanita, and Grace; brothers Joe and Art; daughter Carol Ann; daughter-in-law Brenda; and grandson Chad.
