John Cairns was the son of Robert Cairns
and Margaret Williams. He was born in Dungiven, County Derry, Ireland, now
known as Dungiven, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland.

John's birth date was calculated from his
date of death and his age at death, using
the Tombstone Birthday Calculator at
Ancestor Search.

He married Elizabeth Bennie, daughter of James Bennie and Isabel Hunter, on March 1, 1850, in Clackmannan, Clackmannanshire, Scotland; they were married until his death.

John and Elizabeth's first child, daughter Isabella, was born in Clackmannanshire, Scotland; the other children who survived
were born in England, either in Gateshead, Durham County, or Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland County. The patriarch,
John, immigrated from England to America
in the late 1860s. By 1868, he was listed in
the San Francisco City Directory as "foreman, Golden Gate Chemical Works", a position he held until at least 1876. The matriarch, Elizabeth, and their children followed in the 1870s. The family was settled at 365 Minna Street, San Francisco, when John died. Later, Elizabeth and some of the children relocated temporarily to San Diego County at the southern tip of California.

On the 1900 Census, San Diego, San
Diego County, California, it was stated
that the widowed Elizabeth Cairns had
borne eight children and that five were
living. Among the couple's children were:

Isabella (Cairns) Hutchinson (1850-1886),
Sarah Jane (Cairns) Urquhart (1854-1945),
Mary Ann (Cairns) Ring (1857-1930),
Catherine ("Kate") (Cairns) Vogelman (1858-1936),
John Moor Cairns (1860-1946), and
Elizabeth A. (Cairns) [Jackson] Aldridge (1866-1945).

mid-20th century, Calvary Cemetery was forced to close; the buried were disinterred and relocated. On May 13, 1940, John, Isabella, and baby Jane were removed
to Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Colma where they now rest next to each other in Graves 1, 2, and 3.
