Daughter of Dennis Hoyt, of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and Fidelia (Barton) Hoyt, of Bartonsville, Vermont.

Paternal grandparents are William Hoyt, and Charlotte (Pickering) Hoyt.

American portrait artist. She came to Boston at sixteen, and it was there that she passed her professional life. Her first teachers in art were B. C. Porter and D. T. Kendrick, both of Boston. Her best portraits have been of women. She also painted children, diversifying her work with landscapes and figure pictures. Among her artistic works were "Patience," which was in the National Academy exhibition of 1878; "Industry," which was in the Oliver Ditson collection; "Priscilla the Spinner," which was in the S. L. French collection; "The First Attempt" and "Making Dolly's Dress," which were in the Oliver Ames collection, and "Mamma's Comb," which was in the Robert M. Mason collection.

Phoebe married Lewis Edwin Jenks, son of George Almond Jenks and Phebe Clapp, on November 10, 1863, in Boston, Massachusetts.

*Note having been a noted American Artist, most publications have her birth year published as 1848. Her death record, the 1900 Census, and her inscribed grave marker stands as evidence to correct this fact. All records record her birth at 1838.
