DAR #002884 & SAR #P-104167. **
______________________________
Susan Austin & John Anthony JR. married in 1771 VA.

They had 8 Children = 6 sons & 2 daughters who were raised @ a home they built near the Otter River.
_______________________________
~ Since JR. was the "only son" of John Anthony, SR., he inheried a lot of his father's vast landholdings along the Otter River.

~ SR. lived in Albemarle Co., Bedford Co. & Campbell Co., VA & purchased 1,012 acres in 1754 on both sides of the Otter River & 674 acres in 1759 @ the head of Blackwater/Ivy Creek. He was a Justice-of-the-Peace of Albemarle Co., VA in 1745-1746. He died in 1760.

~ JR. purchased 1,300 acres in 1780 on the south branch of Otter Creek. He was said to have built a brick home on a hill that overlooked Anthony Mill Creek (a tributary of Goose Creek). The Anthony Family lived here in the late 1700's through mid-1800's. This was home to John Anthony JR., wife Susan, & their 8 Children.

~ 3 of SUSAN & JR.'s 6 sons ran several Anthony ferries on the Roanoke River & the Otter River in Franklin, Campbell, & Pittsylvania Counties of VA. Son, Capt. Mark Anthony, had saw mill & grist mill besides the ferry station. There was also an Anthony Bridge which was torn down a few decades ago for "progress" to happen.

~ Susan's husband JR. became a Baptist minister in 1776. He began a church called the Otter Church (which later became Bethlehem Church of Bedford Co., VA). He served his church until his death in 1822.

~ Much of the Anthony holdings were submerged when Smith Mountain Lake & Leesville Lake were formed.

~ Susan & JR.'s youngest son, Charles Anthony, built a home in the early 1800's that he named "Walnut Hill" which was near Evington. His descendants still reside in the beautiful home today.
[A different Walnut Hill (also near Evington) is owned by the Leftwich family. SR.'s Brother, Joseph Anthony, originally owned a portion of the land where this other Walnut Hill was built. Joseph Anthony sold the land in 1782 to his wife's kinfolk, a Clark, who in-turn sold it to Samuel Moorman in 1802 who then sold it in 1883 to his son-in-law, a Leftwich. That home is on the historic registry.]
-------------------------------
~ Regarding Susan & JR.'s son, William 'Banks' Anthony:
In the Library of VA @ Richmond, there is a large collection of letters, deeds, documents, etc. from the youngest son of John Anthony JR. = Charles Anthony (1793-1884) & his daughter (Callie J. Brandon 1839-1886) & his grand'daughter' (Charles Anthony 1883-1966). One of the accounts is that Charles saw his older brother, Banks Anthony, riding up to the homeplace one evening in 1815. He then saw the approaching Banks & his horse literally disappear. Days later, the family learned that William Banks Anthony had been killed @ The Battle of New Orleans (during The War of 1812) on the very day that Charles saw Banks' ghost riding his horse up to the homeplace. As late as 1960, Charles' granddaughter (who was literally named Charles Anthony) told a reporter the story of her grandpa seeing his brother Banks' ghost riding up to the homeplace on the same day that Banks died in battle.
