Bill Reed, 87 of Stratford died March 5, 2017.

Memorial service will be at 2 pm Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at First Baptist Church in Stratford with Reverend Charles Mendenhall officiating. Arrangements by Morrison Funeral Directors of Stratford.

Bill Reed was born in Altus, OK on August 14, 1929, to Mildred Ione Fellers Reed and William Glenn Reed. He lived in Sherman County all his 87 years except while in college and active military. Bill attended school at Stratford and was Captain of the Stratford State Basketball Championship team and also named to the All-State team, all in 1946. October 3, 1945 Bill became one of the first Eagle Scouts in Stratford, TX. He attended Baylor University in Waco on a basketball scholarship and then later transferred to Texas Tech University in Lubbock, where he majored in Agriculture. After college, he served his Country as a member of the United States Army for two years in Korea, as part of the 1st Cavalry Division. Even though he had never played football before his military service, he was named the 1st Cavalry Division Runner-Up for MVP for his play as nose-guard, on the Artillery Division Football Team.

Bill married Margaret Van Vacter in Clayton, New Mexico on May 19, 1956. To this marriage of 60 Years they have two sons, William R. Reed and Donal L. Reed. Bill is a member of the First Baptist Church of Stratford.

Bill formed several partnerships with his sons known as Bill Reed & Sons, Reed INC., and Butte Lake Ranch in Sherman and Dallam Counties of Texas and Baca, Prowers, and Bent Counties of Colorado. Bill enjoyed farming and ranching. He liked to ‘test the water' in new innovations of the farming and ranching industry. He was one of the first, if not the first, pivot irrigation farmers in the area. He was Farmer of the Year in Sherman County in 1990. Bill, Ricky, and Don were Resident Conservation Farmers of Sherman County Soil & Water Conservation District in 2002, as well as Resident Conservation Farmers of Region 1 in 2003. Bill was also named KGNC Radio Amarillo Chamber of Commerce 2013 Farmer and Rancher of the year.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents William Glenn Reed and Mildred Ione Fellers Reed, Sister Cynthia Schoenhals, and Brother Carroll Reed.

Bill is survived by his wife Margaret Reed of the home, son William R. and wife D'Lynn of Stratford, son Donal L. and wife ViAnn of Stratford, Four grandchildren Adam of Stratford, Brad and wife Rachael of Dumas, Katelyn and husband Cesar Salcido of Stratford, Brent and wife Alexa of Stratford. Three great grandchildren Brayson, Aubrey, and Brexlann Reed. A Brother Jack and wife Gwen Reed of Hot Springs, Arkansas, and numerous nieces and nephews.
