Colonel Clingen also was a member of the Fenian Brotherhood, appointed as one of the chief organizers, commanded a regiment during the Fenian Raids in June 1866 and served as the Colonel of the 7th Regiment, Irish Republican Army out of Buffalo, NY, He also held the post of Chief Ordinance officer for the western districts. He also was a captain in the Clan na Gael guard.
When he moved to Chicago in the early 1870's he became active in Chicago politics and became the appointed clerk of the Armory Police Court.
