Ruth E. Schmidt, age 95, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away late Saturday evening, March 4, 2017, at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis.
She was born March 8, 1921, in Mary's Town, W Va., daughter of the late John and Mary (Davis) Short.
Mrs. Schmidt resided in Michigan since 1946 coming from Virginia. On Feb. 21, 1946 she married David E. Schmidt in Bluefield, Va. He died Aug. 31, 1974.
She had been employed by the Central Meat Market in Sturgis and as a custodian at the Sturgis Public Schools.
She was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Sturgis where she was also a member of the Ladies Aid. She enjoyed refinishing furniture and was proud to have served her country in the Women's Army Corp during World War II earning the rank of sergeant.
Mrs. Schmidt is survived by one daughter, Sandra Mow of Sturgis; two sons, John Schmidt of Sturgis and Charles Schmidt of Indiana; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one sister, Catherine Bowes of Florida; sister-in-law, Josephine Schmidt of Sturgis; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and several brothers and sisters.
In accordance with Ruth's wishes there will be no visitation. A graveside service and burial will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis. The Rev. Darin Warnecke of St. John's Lutheran Church of Sturgis will officiate
