Roman Catholic Cardinal. After studying at the seminary in Sao Paulo, Brazil and the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, Italy, he took his vows and became a priest in October 1904. He was then assigned to several ecclesiastical posts before being appointed Archbishop of Olinda, Brazil in April 1916. Five years later he became Coadjutor Archbishop of Sao Sebastiao do Rio de Janeiro and Titular Archbishop of Pharsalus. Following the death of Cardinal Joaquim Arcoverde de Albuquerque Cavalcanti in April 1930, Pope Pius XI named him as Cavalcanti's replacement in July of that year. One of his notable accomplishments was negotiating to save the life of Brazilian President Washington Luis Pereira de Sousa during a military coup, after persuading de Sousa to resign and leave the presidential palace peacefully. Another notable event was the September 1931 dedication of the famous statue of Christ the Redeemer that resides on the peak of Corcovado mountain in the Tijuca Forest National Park that overlooks the city of Rio de Janeiro. In 1941 he helped to found the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro. He died from a heart attack at the age of 60.
