Naomi Sewell Richardson was born to Perry W. Sewell, and Florence Snowden Sewell in Lincoln University, Pennsylvania on September 24th, 1892. Naomi's father, a minister, would move the family to Washingtonville in 1901, when he took up position of Reverend at the Bethany Presbyterian Church. Naomi would become the first African American to graduate from Washingtonville High School, before attending Howard University in 1910. While there, she helped found the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority with 22 other women who "wanted to do more for our community into which we would be going after we graduated...not only a social group, but a working group." Naomi and her fellow sisters would participate in the 1913 Women's Suffrage March in Washington D.C.
