During construction of the Holland Tunnel from New York City under the Hudson River to Jersey City, New Jersey, the architect Mr. Holland died. They named the tunnel after him while his New Jersey counterpart, John F. Boyle, had the Plaza at the New Jersey end of the Tunnel named in his honor. John Boyle also chaired the New Jersey Interstate Bridge and Tunnel Commission between 1921 and 1927. During his tenure, New Jersey and Pennsylvania built the Delaware Bridge spanning the Delaware River between New Jersey and Philadelphia.
