Katherine (Kay) L. Shaw, 93, of Port Huron, soul and spirit transitioned to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 3, 2017 after a long stay at the Marwood Manor.
Katherine was born in Port Huron, Michigan on December 23, 1923, Katherine attended Port Huron High School. She also attended SC4 and Wilberforce University in Ohio. She was the first Afro – American female to work at the Mercy Hospital where she worked as a License Practical Nurse in ER surgery with Sister Mary Jarlath, OB labor and delivery, Pediatrics, medical and surgical floor. She worked for Prestolite as an Industrial nurse. She worked as a housing aide for the Port Huron Housing Commission. In 1977, she moved to Florida attended Brevard County Community College completing and receiving an associates degree in Secretarial Science in 1980. She worked at the Kennedy Space Center at NASA where she was employed as an executive secretary. She lived to see many accomplishments of the NASA program and meet many of the astronauts.
She loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her philosophy for them was "Believe in yourself and trust in God."
She love to do oil painting, music, travel, learning languages, and singing in her church choir.
But her passion was nursing. She volunteered at the People’s Clinic, was a foster grandparent at the Port Huron Hospital, and assisted many of the ill in the community. She received "Woman of the Year' award from Port Huron Men’s Club in 1996.
Celebrating her life, son: Terrill (Marjorie) Shaw, daughter: Marilyn (Louis) Moncrief, grandchildren: Ronald Shaw, Jr. Sandra Alyward, Twanda Shaw, Tramayne Boudreaux, Tranise Keys, Lagina Moncrief, Leesa Welch, Lynnette Faulkner, and Linda Shaw, a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, she was predeceased by son, Ronald (Colleen) Shaw, Sr., brothers and sisters, Herman Bell, Jr, Charles Bell, James and Richard Bell, Jessie Mae, Shelby, Mildred Russell, two special brothers in law, Dr. Reginald Shelby, Sr. and Charlie Russell, her parents; Herman (Pauline) Bell, Sr., great aunt and uncle Robert (Effie) Lewis.
She is a member of Christ Centered Community Church. Reverend Kevin and Jessica Totty will officiate the funeral, funeral will be held on Friday, March 10, 2017 in Smith Family Funeral Home– North, at 11:00 AM, visitation beginning at 10:00 AM till time of service. Burial will follow in Caswell Cemetery. Visitation will also be held on Thursday, March 9, 2017 from 6:00 p.m. till 8:00 p.m. in Smith family Funeral Home—North.
