Philemon was the son of Matilda SEELEY and Philemon Lee AUSTIN of New York. Philemon Lee was also a veteran of the War of 1812.

Philemon AUSTIN was born in Rideau, Ontario, Canada, but his parents' home was in Monroe County, NY both before and after his birth. Dates for his birth are given in different documents as 1812 and 1813. His father worked as a pumpmaker on the Erie Canal project, which probably accounts for the time the family spent in Rideau.

Note: The area is now known as Rideau Lakes, and designated a township. It is a World Heritage Site thanks to the Rideau Canal and Waterways.

Philemon married Mary Ann WEBSTER on 22 April 1835 in Mendon, Monroe Co., NY. At some time after 1853 they migrated to Calhoun Co., MI and lived there in the Marengo area the rest of their lives. He was a railroad contractor and farmer.

Their known children:

1) Jane Elizabeth LORD or LOUD b. 6 Dec 1836 in Perinton, Monroe Co., NY.

2) MARY ANN AUSTIN LEWIS b. 10 Dec 1839 in Perinton, Monroe Co., NY. [twin of #3] D: 7 Feb 1871.

3) Martha Ann HOUCK or HOWK b. 10 Dec 1839 in Perinton, Monroe Co., NY. [twin of #2]

4) Albert Webster AUSTIN b. 1844 in Perinton, Monroe Co., NY.

5) Gilbert Isaac AUSTIN b. 27 June and died 11 Sept in 1846, Perinton, Monroe Co., NY.

6) Henry Seth AUSTIN b. 23 Jan 1851 in Perinton, Monroe Co., NY.

7) Cora Tirzah AUSTIN b. 22 May 1853 in Perinton, Monroe Co., NY.

Note: Frances AUSTIN - b. 1832: A possible oldest child appears the 1850 census. She is listed as a "domestic servant", age 18, but so are all the other older AUSTIN daughters, and each of the older sons is listed as "farm laborer". Fannie may have been the first child of Philemon and a very young Mary, but she may also have been Philemon's child from an unknown first marriage or pre-marital relationship.

Philemon is buried in Marengo Village cemetery in Calhoun Co., MI. This is a pioneer cemetery as far as most non-Native burials are concerned. The only existing ledger for it is in the township office in Marshall since about 2004. There is no office or sexton for this cemetery, and many headstones are toppled or missing.
