Officer, 7 Men Die in Explosion At Camp Swift

An explosion in the course of demolition exercises Tuesday killed a lieutenant and seven enlisted men and wounded five other soldiers.

The explosion occurred inside the reservation four miles from the main camp, Col. L. A. Kurtz, camp commander, said. All the dead were members of the regiment.

Pvt. Frank Carter, 22, wife, Mrs. Adene Carter, Bonham, Tex.

Pvt. Adrian Wright, 19, mother, Mrs. Dolly A. Wright, Route 4, Weatherford, Tex.

Pvt. James E. Pate, 18, wife, Mrs. Ola Mae Pate, Brownwood, Tex.

Pvt. Charles C. Wade, 20, mother, Mrs. Sarah E. Wade, Bruceville, Tex.

Pvt. James A. McCorquodale, 24, wife, Mrs. Maxine McCorquodale, Garden City, Tex.

Pvt. Harry M. Jones, 19, of Route 2, Chickasha, Okla., wife, Mrs. Louise Jones.

Pvt. Frank Leonardos, 19, of 202 McNeil, Shreveport, La., Mother, Mrs. Beatie B. Leonardos.

Seven others, whose names were withheld, were hospitalized.

Bodies of the eight dead will be shipped to their homes for burial.

Details of the explosion will not be made public until a board of officers has completed an investigation.
