Larry F. Mclendon

Larry F. McLendon, 78, passed away Saturday, August 17, 2013, at a local medical center in Abilene, TX. Arrangements were under the direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 Hwy 277 South.

Larry was born in a small community south of Hamlin, TX on February 4, 1935 to Ernest and Doris Lakey McLendon. He moved to Ft. Worth, TX in 1944 and graduated from North Side High School in 1953. Larry furthered his education by attending and graduating from Texas A&M in 1957. After being commissioned in 1957, he entered the United States Air Force in 1958 and began pilot training.

He served in Vietnam from 1966 to 1969 and then again from 1973 to 1974. Flying 278 combat missions, he logged a total of 1275 hours of combat time in his B-52 and was shot at several times by surface to air missiles with no hits. He received numerous awards and citations during his time in the service.

Larry retired from the United States Air Force at Dyess AFB in March of 1984 as Colonel with 27 years of dedicated service. He was an antique collector and enjoyed buying and selling antiques. Larry was a member of Hamlin Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte McLendon.

Survivors include his son, Sean McLendon and wife, Eve; and a grandchild, Madison McLendon.
