Pioneer Merchant in Los Angeles, California. Augustus Chauvin came to California in 1849, and lived for 19 years in El Dorado, near Placerville, where he owned and operated a grocery and general mercantile store. He came to Los Angeles in 1868, and opened a grocery store on Main Street near Temple Street, known as the El Dorado Store. He invested profitably in Los Angeles real estate, and sold the grocery business to retire in 1886. Son of Sylvester and Helene Chauvin of St. Charles, Missouri, he married Elizabeth Rose in 1857. A veteran of the Mexican-American War of 1846, he served under General Frederick T. Dent. From his obituary in the Los Angeles Herald, June 26, 1897:
"CHAUVIN - In this city, June 25, 1897, Augustus C., beloved husband of Mrs. Elizabeth Chauvin, and father of Mrs. W. G. (Laura) Hutchison, a native of St. Louis, MO, aged 72 years 10 months. Funeral from the residence, 1132 South Figueroa street, Sunday, June 27, at 2:30 p.m. Interment at Rosedale cemetery."
"CHAUVIN - In this city, June 25, 1897, Augustus C., beloved husband of Mrs. Elizabeth Chauvin, and father of Mrs. W. G. (Laura) Hutchison, a native of St. Louis, MO, aged 72 years 10 months. Funeral from the residence, 1132 South Figueroa street, Sunday, June 27, at 2:30 p.m. Interment at Rosedale cemetery."
