Lawrence Roger Powell, of Grant, Alabama, passed away early Thursday, March 2, 2017. He was 83 years old.

A memorial service will be held at Grant church of Christ, Grant, Alabama on Monday, March 6, 2017 at 6:30 pm. The family will receive guests following the service.

Roger was born October 3, 1933 in Davie County, North Carolina. He graduated from Davie County High School. He was a graduate of David Lipscomb University.

He was married to Clara Sue Forrest Powell for 63 years. He was a gospel preacher for 50 years. Roger was a local preacher in Waynesboro, VA; Statesville, NC; and Wintergreen, VA. He had a passion for mission work and spent time campaigning in Jamaica, Moldova, and Nigeria.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Clara Sue Powell; parents, Lawrence and Nina Powell; two brothers, Ben and Bob (Francis) Powell; and Sister, Janie (Wesley) Potts.

Roger is survived by his sister, Geraldine Haynes of Wilmington, NC; sister-in-law, Marie Powell; daughter, Elaine Mahler of Afton, Virginia; daughter Janice (Mark) Bales of Afton, Virginia; son David (Rhonda) Powell of Grant, Alabama; grandchildren, Ashley (Jerel) Hunt, Laura (Daniel) Boyd, Nathan (Amy) Powell, and Rachael Mahler (David); great-grandchildren, Annie Ruth, Jon Grayson, Levi, Carolaine, Corlew, and Finn (to be born in May).

In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Clara Sue Powell Camp Scholarship Fund, in care of Grant church of Christ (4197 Cathedral Caverns Highway, Grant, AL 35747).
