Elijah was born 30 October 1759 in Stoughton, Massachusetts. He married Unity Estey on 05 July 1781 in Sharon, Massachusetts. They had 11 children.

Between 1781 and 1792 while living in Sharon, Massachusetts they had two daughters and five sons. Unity, Elijah Jr, Jesse, Sophia, Stillman, Marcus and Ansel.
They then moved to Granby, Massachusetts and had two more sons. James and Luke. About 1798 they had a daughter named Rowena. Where she was born is unknown.
In 1800 they are living in Sangerfield, New York and have another son Elias.
In 1810 they are living in Wolcott, New York.
They are not found in the 1820 census and all their children are now married or living on their own and no longer living with their parents. It is presumed Elijah and Unity died sometime between 1810 and 1820.
Their burial location is unknown but is most likely in Wolcott, New York their last known residence.
