Much of the following info on the WARREN family was sent to my grandfather, Clyde I. Warren, upon the death of his wife, Martha Loree McMINN in 1971. It traced history of my 2nd great-grandfather John T. WARREN (Clyde's grandfather) in GA and John T Warren's Uncle William (Billy)Warren in NC. I've only provided the info on John's line. The article got me interested in my "roots" and I've been doing genealogy research ever since. I've verified almost all of this info. I've not verified John's 3rd marriage.

Line of John T. Warren

John T. Warren was born in Newton County Georgia Mar. 30th 1826. He was married three times. First to Mary Jane RUSSELL about 1850. They moved to Gordon Co. about that date & purchased a farm one mile North East of the present town of Sugar Valley next to Mary Jane's parents, James T Russell and Mary A. Gilmore. John engaged in the mercantile business for awhile. His store being on the east side of the public road from the Sugar Valley Baptist church. At the outbreak of the Civil War five children had been born into their home. He answered the call of the South and enlisted in the Fourth Ga. Calvary, Joe Wheeler's division. He was Captured not far from his home during the battle of Resaca and spent fourteen months in Rock Island, Ill Prison (John was one of the last prisoners exchanged before the end of the War).

During the war his 1st wife died leaving five small children. They were taken care of by their grandmother Mary A GILMORE RUSSELL (she lived next door) until after the war. She may be buried near her father, James T. Russell, in the Russell Hill Cemetery. There is no grave marker but there is an empty space there.

In 1865 he married Mrs. Sarah Ann TURNER a widow lady with one child. Four children were born of this union. Coming home form the war he found every thing in a dilapidated condition but being thrifty he soon got on his feet again. He erected a cotton gin at Sugar Valley and had the misfortune of getting his right hand cut off. Being incapacitated for manual labor he offered himself as a candidate for the office of tax collector and was elected serving one term which lasted from Jan 3rd, 1883 to Jan. 1885.
