Shirley J. Buchanan (nee Liedtke), age 81, of Valparaiso, IN, formerly of Portage, died Monday, February 27, 2017. Shirley is survived by her 2 children: Bobbi (William Foster) Herron-Foster of Valparaiso and Barry Buchanan of Jacksonville, FL; 2 grandaughters: Jacquelyn (Michael) Herron-Bustos and Jill (Mike) Herron-Cruz; 6 great-grandchildren, Isaac, Marta, and Elise Bustos, Madeline, Jack, and Samuel Cruz; Second daughter: Kerry (Bill) Mott; and beloved-family friend, Patrick Hughes. Shirley was preceded in death by her loving husband, Bobby (Bob) Buchanan; parents: Melvin and Della Liedtke of Crown Point, prior Tolleston; 2 brothers: Melvin and Chuck Liedtke; 5 sisters, Delores “Dee” Mushinsky, Viola Ferlus, Sally Tokarz, Susan Wall, and Linda Ballard, with many nieces and nephews. Shirley called herself a “Child of God” and loved the Lord, Jesus with all her heart. She enjoyed teaching the adult Sunday school class at Faith Assembly Church in Lake Station for 25 years. Once she moved to Valparaiso, she became a member of Heartland Christian Church, where she loved worshiping and fellowshipping with the “Seniors” meeting regularly at Pastor Byron’s home. She was a faithful wife and mother, who sacrificially loved her Down syndrome angel, Judy. She was employed at Hunter Corporation in the accounts receivable and payroll department. Years later, Shirley worked at the VNA Hospice Center of NWI.
