James Killough [Killoch as written on his marker] Henry was born on his parents' farm, including land on the banks of Rocky Creek all lying in the Hazelwood section of Chester District, SC. While still an infant the family moved to what had been the William Ross farm near Old Purity, almost certainly part of the original 400 acre 1772 Ross grant, but this needs to be documented.
James Killough or J. Killough Henry was one of at least eight children of William John and Sarah Torbit Henry. James became a noted Chester area lawyer and his brother Hugh McMaster Henry became a noted ARP minister having graduated from Erskine Seminary in Due West, South Carolina. Killough had a successful career as a lawyer, later becoming solictor and judge in the Sixth Judicial Circuit serving Chester County.
At the Chester County Courthouse a plaque honoring Judge Henry is enscribed:
"He did justly, loved mercy, and walked humbly with his God."
J. K. Henry married Sarah Ella Hamilton of Marissa, Illinois, only daughter of John Carmichael and Margaret Meek Hamilton, from families formerly residing in Chester District. Ella and Killough were married in Winnsboro, Fairfield County, SC on Tuesday, February 7, 1888. From this union were born nine children with the majority married and providing many grandchildren and descendants.
Judge J. K. Henry and wife Ella Hamilton Henry celebrated their 50th anniversary with most all of these descendants and their spouses present and there is a photo at that time probably of the entire family, with the long-time employee Jack Archie, and the family dog, Monk on the front porch steps of the Henry home published in the local heritage book, some twenty-five years ago.
