James R. Mardis, 54, a Brownsville attorney, passed away on Saturday, December 16, 2006 at Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville, surrounded by his loving family.
Jim graduated from Texas A&M University in 1972 and thereafter obtained his law degree from Texas Tech University in 1974 at the age of 22. He began the practice of law at the Midland County Legal Aid Office in Midland, Texas, followed by a move to the Rio Grande Valley where he became an Assistant District Attorney in Willacy County and later Cameron County, where he successfully prosecuted numerous high profile cases. He left the District Attorney's office to work for the law firm of Adams, Graham, Jenkins, Graham & Hamby in Harlingen followed by a partnership in 1982 with Ferrero, Brasch, Friebele and Mardis in 1986 and ultimately as a sole practitioner in Brownsville.
Jim was an avid fan of his Texas A&M Aggies, the Denver Broncos and the St. Louis Cardinals.
Predeceasing him in death are his father, Fred R. Mardis and his uncle, Herby Johnson.
Surviving him are his mother, Mary Evelyn Johnson Mardis and his sister Cathy (Tommy) Mardis Taylor of Hudson, Ohio; his wife of almost 30 years, Lourdes Trevino Mardis and his two sons, James R. Mardis , Jr. (Denise) of Germantown, Maryland and Robert W. Mardis of Laguna Vista.
Also surviving him are his beloved 6 year old granddaughter, Lea Robin Mardis of Maryland; his aunt, Gayle Johnson and his cousins Danny and Theresa Johnson as well as Lynn and Leland Calvert; his nephew and niece, Nicholas and Courtney Taylor; his mother-in-law, Elvira Trevino and his extended Trevino family, by marriage, as well as several very close friends. He will be dearly missed by all.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
A memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, December 19, 2006 at 5:30 p.m. at Vineyard Christian Fellowship, 1200 Macintosh St., Brownsville, Texas. James Odabashian will be the officiant.
Arrangements are under the direction of Joe I. Trevino, Garza Memorial Funeral Home, 1025 E. Jackson Street, Brownsville.
Instructions from the funeral home is Jim's body was cremated.
