Calvin J Peterson
July 15, 1924 - February 27, 2017

Calvin J. Peterson, age 92, resident of Brainerd, died on Monday, February 27, 2017 at Good Samaritan Society - Bethany. Cal was born on July 15, 1924 in Brainerd to the late Christian. and Ragna (Rosvold) Peterson.

At age 15 Cal bought a horse, which started a lifetime of horses. At age 24 he and Nona Zierke were married in Brainerd on September 1, 1948. He lived in the Brainerd area all of his life. They planned on having $500 in the bank and owning a new car before starting a family but, Vicky Ann arrived the next spring. Cal and Nona lived in their home in town for 14 years and in 1962 moved to the country. They built a home on forty acres and called it E.Z Acres, on Legionville Road.

As a youth, Cal worked for the N.Y.A. (National Youth Administration), pouring cement and making cement blocks., then in 1941 he started working for Northern Pacific Shops, as a boilermaker helper, working on boilers, and locomotive steam engines. He then worked in Crosby Iron Mine, for Zontelli. In 1947 he started work at the North West Paper Company, where he was a laborer, saw room, pipe shop, and watchman with his dog, Spike. Cal retired from Potlatch Paper Company, he worked there 40 years and 3 months

Cal and Nona both enjoyed country western music, he was a big fan of Gene Autry. Nona and Cal's big hobby has been their horses, when they were courting they rode double and ate pickled herring. They were two of the original members of the Brainerd Saddle Club, performing at fair grounds, horse shows and parades. Cal won many trophies and ribbons on his horse named Boots. They always had time for trail rides and camp overs. Cal was a member of Cowboys for Christ. He was Santa Clause for Christmas, he sang at many horse shows and jamborees. He also sang with his daughter, Vicky for different programs. He was a strong swimmer. He saved many life's over the years in swimming and horse accidents.

Survivors include his loving wife Nona; his daughter, Vicky (Maurice) Schwartz; grandsons, Justin Jay and Christopher Roy (Mindy); six great grandchildren.

Services will be held 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at Nelson-Doran Funeral Home in Brained with Bishop Tanner officiating. Visitation will begin the hour prior to services. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Arrangements with Nelson-Doran Funeral Home, Brainerd, MN
