El Salvadoran Statesman. Born Carlos Humberto Romero Mena, he served as President of El Salvador from July 1, 1977 to October 15, 1979. He served in the El Salvadoran army and rose to the rank of general. On February 20, 1977 he, backed by ultraconservatives, won the presidential election which was wracked by bloodshed and clouded by accusations of voting fraud. He took office on July 1, 1977 and remained in office until he was deposed in a coup led by younger military officers led by Col. Adolfo Arnoldo Majano Ramos on October 15, 1979. His administration was largely characterized by rising violence and instability. He went into exile in Mexico after the coup. He later backed an unsuccessful coup against the military-civilian junta which had ruled since he had been ousted from office. He later returned to El Salvador from exile.
