Walter Sherwood Stanley, 87, native of Johnston County and longtime resident of Mount Olive, passed away Sunday night, Feb. 26, 2017, at Wayne Hospital.

He was a veteran with service in the United States Army.
His working career was that of being a produce manager, mostly with Colonial and Big Starr grocery stores.

For many years, he and his wife resided on West Main Street in Mount Olive, where they always maintained a picturesque yard and lawn. Soon after her passing some 18 months ago, he began residing at Brookdale Berkeley in Goldsboro.

Mr. Stanley is survived by his daughter, Vicki Outlaw Best and her special friend, John Ferriter, both of Orlando, Fla.; two granddaughters, Tonya Lee and her fiancé, Ricky Richardson, both of Pikeville and Tabitha Best and her special friend, Sonia Garza, both of West Melbourne, Fla.; a sister, Margaret S. Lee of Smithfield; two brothers, Jimmy Stanley of Garner and Pete Stanley of Smithfield; and a sister-in-law, Hilda Smith of Mount Olive, her daughter, Teresa W. Bryant of Goldsboro, and her son, Tim Whitfield of Mount Olive. He is also survived by many special and dear friends and his kind neighbors.

He will be remembered by all for his kind and gentle nature and his steadfast dedication in caring for his beloved wife.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Smith Stanley, and his parents, Rother R. and Bessie Johnson Stanley.

Graveside services will be held Friday, March 3, at 11 a.m. at Wayne Memorial Park. Officiating will be the Rev. Jeffrey Dail, and a eulogy will be given by Dave Price.
