John Phillip Smoot, Jr. departed this life suddenly on Friday, December 2, 2011 at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. He was the son of the late John Phillip Smoot, Sr. and the late Louise Smoot.

John, affectionately called "Brother" was born on August 29, 1936 in Bel Alton, Maryland. He attended and graduated from Bel Alton High School. He also attended Bowie State College and later enlisted into the United States Army where he served four years and was Honorably Discharged in February 1962. During his time in the military John pursued a boxing career where he became an amateur boxer winning many bouts. Upon completion of his military service, John joined the Bethesda Fire Department. His subsequent employment services included the Calvert Cliff Power Plant, John's Enterprises (Complete Lawn Services) and currently the Golden Corral Restaurant in La Plata and Waldorf, Maryland.

John's interest and pastimes included his passion for his family and his zest for landscape with his brother, Leon. Among his other areas of interest were the designing of his western wear, dancing and his love of live bands. He was also an avid fan of the Washington Redskins.

John married the late Agnes Prather on August 22, 1966. This union was blessed with a daughter, Andrea Renee.

In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by his sisters, Theresa and Cecelia.

John leaves to cherish his memories his daughter, Andrea Renee Smoot; stepdaughters, Rhonda and Jackie; grandchildren, DeOntre, DeAndra, Kenya and Niah, step grandchildren, Zenobia, Valentino, Marcia and Warren Jr., seven great grandchildren, sisters, Mary Louise, Elizabeth and Rosalee; brothers, James (Alice), Thomas (Stephanie) and Leon, sister-in-law,
Beatrice Brackens and a host of other relatives and friends including the family pet named Dog.
