The Old Cove Burying Ground has a fieldstone marked "L C 1711" which is the oldest dated stone in this yard. It no doubt marks the grave of Lydia [Gilbert] [Richardson] Chapman who died ca. December 1711 aged about 57 years. She was the third wife of "Captain" John Chapman who ran the Chapman Ferry from East Haddam to Haddam for many years. He lived where Goodspeed's Landing now is and owned quite a bit of land.
