John W Bennett Died March 26, 1862 Aged 87 years 6 ms. and 17 days

Updated Note: I discovered a listing of some of the headstones at the Holmdel Cemetery and Mausoleum by"Staats" at the Monmouth County Historical Association (MCHA) in Freehold, NJ. It's in a notebook in their library titled "Gravestone Inscriptions Monmouth County Volume 2 Holmdel Howell." The listing indicates that the grave and headstone of John W Bennett is, in fact, located in the Holmdel Cemetery and Mausoleum. It includes the following information on this stone:
"No. 137 - The stone is similar to #136 (Elizabeth Bennett's stone) in all respects excepting it is a little more weather beaten, and has a larger number of weather cracks."

------------------------------
It is believed that this is the headstone and grave for the John W Bennett (also known as John W Van Mater Bennet) that some records say was initially buried in the Red Meeting House Cemetery, also known as the Old Holmdel Yard, that is located elsewhere in Holmdel, NJ. There is a separate Memorial for John W (#190887316) set up on the Old Holmdel Yard pages.

It is believed that he was reinterred from there to this location at the Holmdel Cemetery and Mausoleum. The book "New Jersey Graveyard and Gravestone Inscriptions Locators MONMOUTH COUNTY" states that numerous graves from Old Holmdel Yard were moved to Holmdel Cemetery because they were not being properly maintained at Old Holmdel Yard.

The headstone in located in the family plot for Albert I (J) Bennett, his wife, Matilda DRUM Bennett, and their sons, daughters and other family members.

I checked with the onsite office to try to verify matters but they have no records of what graves were transferred to their facility.

Albert I (J) Bennett was one of the children of John W Bennett and his wife, Elizabeth Van Mater.

John and Elizabeth had the following seven children:
Alchey (Aaltje) [Memorial #19160064 - buried at Old Holmdel Yard, Holmdel, NJ],
Anne [Memorial #7604280 - buried at the Atlantic Cemetery in Colts Neck, NJ],
Elizabeth [Memorial #7574334 - buried at the Atlantic Cemetery in Colts Neck,NJ],
William V [Memorial #37540018 - buried at Old Holmdel Yard, Holmdel, NJ],
Mary [Memorial #36361629 - buried at the Atlantic Cemetery in Colts Neck,NJ],
Albert [Memorial #120306303 - buried at Holmdel Cemetery and Mausoleum, Holmdel, NJ]
Sidney [Memorial #7604104 - buried at the Atlantic Cemetery in Colts Neck,NJ]

Note: I have located a copy of a deed from the Holmdel HIstorical Society regarding the Old Holmdel Yard and the Bennet family. In 1828, John W Bennet, his wife, Elizabeth Van Mater and his brother, Cyrenius Bennet sold the land that this cemetery was placed on. The Bennet's were devout members of the Dutch Reformed Church.
